Seven (Surprising) Health Benefits Of Drinking Wine

That will inspire you to pour a glass

We have all heard that one glass of wine from time to time isn’t bad for health, but how exactly does wine contribute to health?

The answers appear to be almost endless as new studies continue to continually back up the health benefit claims of drinking wine moderately.

From attacking cancer cells to a decreased mortality rate, a glass of wine a day has proven to be good for your body both now and in the long run.

By sipping a glass of chilled white or red wine, here is how you will be helping your mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.

#1 - Wine Contains Antioxidants

Wine could be your answer in your battle to fight off free radicals, responsible for instigating terrible health issues such as cancer. Wine is filled with antioxidants that attack and kill free radicals that may be lurking around.

But which one is the best?

The answer is white wine as it is rich in antioxidants.

Findings from a study conducted by scientists from the University of Barcelona indicate that phenols in white wine had the same amount of antioxidants (if not more) as those found in red wine.

These findings are quite impressive, considering that most wine drinkers believe that red wine offers more health benefits when consumed in moderation.

#2 - Boosts The Immune System

While you shouldn't stop taking your vitamins on a daily basis, drinking a glass of wine every day can boost your immune system. Moderate consumption of alcohol can help keep your immune system fit and goes a long way to warding off infections.

But, do not get too carried away, explain the experts from Gold Coast Detox and Rehab, "as excessive consumption of alcohol could lead to destructive tendencies that defeat the purpose of drinking the alcoholic beverage to boost your immunity."

#3 - Increases Bone Density

As you grow older, your bones become brittle.

While you could boost calcium levels in your body by drinking milk, sipping on a glass of chilled wine is another, more relaxing way of increasing your calcium intake. Red wine contains a high level of silicon, which is known to improve the density of minerals in your bones. Apart from increasing mass, the mineral also reduces the chances of bones becoming porous.

Wine, just like a warm cup of milk, can help you fall asleep faster. In addition, wine may also help you lose excess weight. Drinking red wine in particular may help you drop extra kilos.

A polyphenol known as ‘resveratrol’, found in red wine, converts white fat, which are larger cells that store energy and expand as we gain weight, into obesity-fighting beige fat and this fat is much easier to lose.

#4 - Reduces the Risk of Stroke

Moderate consumption of alcohol, wine included, can prevent blood clotting.

Interestingly, wine is a natural blood thinner and could aid break up any blood clots that could cause a stroke. However, this lowered risk of blood clots benefits women more than men. Red wine, to be more specific, contains phenols, which act as natural blood thinners – much like aspirin – and that is thanks to resveratrol.

According to a study conducted by John Hopkins University’s Medical Centre, the findings show that the resveratrol present in the skin of red grapes could help prevent stroke when the fruits are turned into wine.

According to aged care health experts, it is the small things that can make a huge difference in the quality of life for older people. They explain “most people know that a well balanced diet is essential to maintaining health as we age. But as these studies have shown, wine may actually contribute to good health, with taking care of the brain always a priority as we age.”

However, the experts from Austin Therapies explain, "it is worth noting that while moderate wine consumption goes a long way to prevent strokes, heavy drinkers are at a higher risk of experiencing the opposite and an even higher risk of having a heart attack. Like everything good in life, moderation is essential."

#5 - Reduces Cancer Risk

Wine has proven to be a worthy advocate in the battle against cancer.

Drinking a glass of wine can help reduce the risk of prostate cancer, breast cancer, and colon cancer as the antioxidants found in the drink are known to combat free radicals that support the growth of cancerous cells.

Red wine is especially beneficial as it contains resveratrol, which is known to fight both cancerous cells and heart diseases.

A Harvard Medical School study found that men who drank about 4 to 7 glasses of red wine a week were only 52% likely to be diagnosed with cancer of the prostate compared to those who don’t drink red wine.

At the same time, the study found that red wine is particularly protective against aggressive or advanced cancers. While we do not need more excuses to drink wine, the fact that it helps protect our bodies from vicious diseases is a good enough reason to drink up.

If you are looking for a red that is high in resveratrol, then get yourself a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon.

#6 - Improves Cognitive Function

This might sound crazy, but did you know that wine is like food for your brain?

There is evidence suggesting that consuming one glass of wine improves brain function. The chemicals found in red wine keep brain neurons from wasting away.

Wine slows down the onset of neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s and guards our brains against dementia. So, the next time you are doing your brain exercises, consider drinking a glass of wine to gear up your brain.

#7 - Promotes Longevity

What comes to your mind every time you hear about longevity and healthy living?

For most people, the Mediterranean diet is always the first thing on their minds. At the core of this diet, apart from vegetables and olive oil, is wine. There’s something special about drinking a glass of wine daily that increases longevity – and that 'special' thing is resveratrol.

According to the weight loss hypnotherapists at Emotional Health Counselling, researchers have found that the compound activates a specific protein that slows down the ageing of cells. They explain “it is this interaction that increases the user’s overall health, promoting long life. If a decreased rate of mortality isn’t a good enough reason for you to drink a glass of wine, then what else is?”

So, why don’t you do yourself a favour by pouring yourself a glass of wine and toasting to your health!
